“He’s Disgusting Too”: Julia Roberts Would Never Work With An Acting Legend Who’s Been In Both Marvel And Star Wars. It’s His Fault!

Legendary actress Julia Roberts, during her career, has had the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in the industry. Through movies such as Erin Brockovich, the Ocean’s series, and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Roberts has proven her mettle both as an actress and a collaborator.

However, one particular big name, who worked with Roberts on 1994’s I Love Trouble, did not share the best experience with the actress. So much so that Roberts publicly called him “completely disgusting.” The actor was none other than Nick Nolte, who went on to work on franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars.

The seeds of this tension were planted during the production of I Love Trouble, where Julia Roberts and Nolte starred as rival reporters who are forced to team up. While the film was not particularly well-received by critics, it certainly sparked off-screen drama. In a 1993 interview with The New York Times, Roberts spoke candidly about Nolte’s on-set behavior. She admitted to not getting along with him, even describing him as “completely disgusting.” Despite his charm, she added that Nolte had a way of repelling people, a behavior she found difficult to deal with.

From the moment I met him we sort of gave each other a hard time, and naturally we get on each other’s nerves. [While he can be] completely charming and very nice, he’s also completely disgusting. He’s going to hate me for saying this, but he seems go out of his way to repel people. He’s a kick.

Needless to say, Nolte himself acknowledged their disagreements on set, and later revealed that it was mostly ‘his fault.’

Speaking to Insider in another interview, Nolte was asked about the disagreement he had with one of the greatest Hollywood actresses of all time. Roberts had only recently married Lyle Lovett, a marriage which would come to an end just two years later, in 1995. According to Nolte, his approach towards Roberts’ new marriage was what brought on the disagreement:

No, I haven’t. Though it’s buried. I mean, it was absurd what we went through. It was partly my fault and a little bit of hers. Julia got married at the beginning of that film and it was one of those things where I just approached it all wrong.

Considering Roberts was already a senior star, Nolte will be delighted with the way his own career turned out, after I Love Trouble. The actor has since found significant success in the worlds of both Marvel and Star Wars.

One of his most intriguing roles came when he portrayed David Banner in The Incredible Hulk (2008), with his portrayal of the mentally unstable biological father to Bruce Banner leaving a lasting impression.

Nolte also ventured into the Star Wars universe, joining The Mandalorian series in 2019. He voiced the character Kuiil, an Ugnaught who becomes an ally to the Mandalorian protagonist. Both The Mandalorian and The Incredible Hulk can be viewed on Hotstar.
