True Detective is leaving the Night Country behind as the show heads east for Season 5. The anthology series may be moving to a new location, but it’s sticking with the same showrunner as Season 4, Issa Lopez.
The story, setting and characters will all be new, though Lopez said in an interview that ““there’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season].”
The new setting is Jamaica Bay, New York, an estuary along the southern portion of the western tip of Long Island. Honestly, that’s a pretty compelling location. I would be a lot more excited about the next season if the last hadn’t been so incredibly disappointing.
Despite Jodie Foster’s awards for True Detective: Night Country, the show was mostly a jumbled mess with little true detective work, sloppy writing and forced dialogue. The season was rife with meaningless Easter Eggs from Season 1 and ultimately the entire supernatural setup that was established early on led to nothing whatsoever. I could go on and on, but I’ll just point you to my review.
Much like Season 3 of The Rings Of Power, I have little hope that Season 5 of True Detective will be any better than the last. However, as always I do hold out something at least resembling hope when it comes to people learning from their mistakes. Lopez and her team made so many egregious mistakes in Season 4, if they learn from those maybe they’ll come up with something better in Season 5.
