With “Adolescence,” Netflix apparently has a new hit series on its hands. However, for one actor, filming was quite an ordeal.

Topping the Netflix streaming charts and garnering significant attention on social media: The British miniseries “Adolescence” is currently enjoying a remarkable success for the streaming service. The story about a 13-year-old boy who is accused of murdering a classmate is captivating many viewers, not only with its socially relevant, yet difficult-to-deal-with subject matter.

The four one-hour episodes of “Adolescence” are also impressive because they were all shot in one-take format. Each episode was filmed in a single take, without any editing.

This mix, however, caused one actor to regret his acceptance of the series. This was Ashley Walters, who plays Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, who is investigating the murder. The role was introduced to him by his “friend and mentor,” Stephen Graham, who plays the father of the suspect boy.

Ashley Walters despaired of his “Adolescence” role

Speaking to The Mirror (via Cosmopolitan ), Walters admitted he was even close to quitting “Adolescence.” An accident at a basketball game caused his already existing sciatic pain to become almost unbearable.

A good chiropractor ultimately helped him overcome this hurdle, but his problems didn’t end there. He recounted his first day on set:

“When I arrived… I fucking regretted it.”

The series’ one-take production made him feel “so insecure,” as he had to recite a lot of complicated lines with plenty of police jargon, especially since he played a leading role in several scenes in the first episode. This led to a truly unpleasant experience for him:

“Every day I went home and cried over my script. I rocked back and forth, you know. It was the hardest thing in the world.”

You can currently check for yourself whether his efforts were worth it on Netflix, where “Adolescence” is streaming exclusively.
