Andy Serkis has become synonymous with Gollum in Lord of the Rings but there is little that fans know about what really went into playing the part.

In a field of actors endowed with a dozen different skill sets, only Andy Serkis could have pulled off two of the most radically revolutionary roles that forever changed the face of cinema. Fortunately, the actor’s arrival in Hollywood perfectly coincided with Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and the latest Planet of the Apes film series.

The eccentric and wildly gifted English actor has been an invaluable addition to the film industry, blessing Hollywood with such realistic roles as Gollum and Caesar. His creative and technical contributions to both franchises helped make them become critically and commercially successful. He did not let special effects, AI, and CGI render a lifeless version of the deeply layered, emotionally complex, and intricately written characters of Gollum and Caesar.

No actor other than Andy Serkis is capable of expressing such immense range through motion capture performance. The actor has time and again proved his meticulous attention to detail and weirdly enigmatic ability to mimic a variety of voices through the representations of Gollum and Caesar in Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchises respectively.
It is his originality with respect to Gollum that stuns the audience into a state of suspended disbelief. Not only did Serkis help construct the stance, physicality, and overall demeanor of the fictional character but also lent his own exquisitely adaptable voice without the need for further technical renditions.
Today, Serkis’ version of Gollum, including his sass, the slimy quality of his demeanor, the voice, and his overall hypnotic screen presence has become a signature part of the Lord of the Rings franchise. In hindsight, all of it became possible due to clever thinking on Serkis’ part about bringing Gollum alive on the big screen.

Any actor in Serkis’ place would have given his all to the motion capture performance, leaving the voice work and the feisty zestiness of Gollum’s character up for grabs. In Andy Serkis, all three qualities existed in tandem, thus providing a balanced and tasteful reconstruction of a complex character from the page to the screen.
It was his original thinking that helped Serkis build Gollum from the chasms of his imagination. Rather than leaving it in the hands of the writers or the director, Serkis came up with his very own recipe for fleshing out Gollum’s inherent personality and characteristic traits while playing him in the film.
In an interview for the Seattle Pacific University, Serkis revealed the method behind the madness that culminated in the evolution of Gollum on screen:
It would have been very easy to play him as a cut-and-dried villain. But I think the power of the Ring is what is essential to the drama of the character in the films and in the book. And it’s very much about how the individual deals with that responsibility and that drug — I played him as an addict, really.
Further going into an analytical breakdown of his representation of Gollum and why the audience has been able to relate to the villain, Serkis claimed:
I think the reason that there’s been a lot of connection to Gollum over the past year is because people have connected to him and they’ve not judged him immediately. They have said, “There but for the grace of God go I. I wonder how I would have dealt with the responsibility if I had had this powerful drug thrust upon me or given to me. Would I have the moral stature to deal with it?” I don’t think most people would have had the stature to deal with it. I think most people would have been consumed by it. It’s a very powerful thing.
Andy Serkis’ ability to bring such moral and philosophical depth to a character as repulsive as Gollum made the villain a timeless and crucial piece of the story. Despite being a secondary antagonist with very little screen time and dialogue, Gollum has become an even more recognizable pop culture figure than Frodo himself. And all of the credit unquestionably goes to Andy Serkis.
The Lord of the Rings film series is available to stream on Max and Prime Video.
