Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota, along with his younger brother and Penafiel player Andre Silva, have died in a tragic accident in Zamora, Spain – on a road previously described as one of the most dangerous in the country.

Jota, 28, born in Gondomar, was enjoying the off-season in northern Spain, just two weeks after marrying childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso in his hometown of Porto. He had just won the Premier League title and was heading back to the UK.

His car, a Lamborghini, went off the road after a tire blew out during an overtaking manoeuvre on the A-52 motorway in Cernadilla, near the border with Portugal.

Emergency services arrived at the scene in the early hours of Thursday morning and confirmed the deaths of two people.

“According to the official report, the Emergency Medical Unit and primary care staff from the Mombuey Health Center arrived at the scene, who pronounced him dead on the spot,” the statement said about the sad loss of the attacker and his brother.

The A-52 highway has a bad reputation for accidents. In 2020 alone, around 15,000 drivers were fined for speeding.

This road is known for dangerous curves, frequent wildlife crossings, and dense fog, especially in the mountainous areas it passes through.

A survey conducted by the Spanish Users and Consumers Organization confirmed that drivers consider the A-52 among the most problematic roads in the country, due to the lack of protective barriers and numerous unfinished works.

According to reports, Jota was traveling to the port city of Santander to board a ferry to Britain, after doctors had banned him from flying following lung surgery.

His brother, a footballer in the Portuguese second league, was also with him.

Journalist Rui Laura from CNN Portugal confirmed: “The operation was on the lungs, and Jota was advised not to fly.
