Fans eagerly awaiting The Witcher 4’s arrival may miss out on the highly anticipated sequel unless they get an upgrade.
The Witcher series from CD Projekt RED has been around since 2007 when the original game launched as a PC exclusive. Compared to its sequels, the first game isn’t viewed as favourable which is likely why The Witcher is getting a remake, powered by Unreal Engine 5.
What’s more from CDPR, we’re also getting a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 4, which was finally revealed at the recent Game Awards. So it’s fair to say that the Polish developer will be kept busy for quite a while.
Without giving too much away, the recent cinematic reveal trailer for The Witcher 4 not only confirmed that Ciri is the lead protagonist but it also canonised a particular ending to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
As exciting as it is knowing that The Witcher 4 is on the way, the fourth numbered entry in the popular fantasy RPG series could be unplayable for millions of fans.
Much like the remake of the original game, we know that The Witcher 4 is being powered by Unreal Engine 5, which should confirm that it will be released on current platforms.
However, as confirmed in a blog post by CDPR, The Witcher 4 cinematic reveal trailer is powered by an unannounced NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU graphics card. This has led some fans to believe that The Witcher 4 might not be released on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S.
“I’m a little scared for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 owners,” said Redditor HomeMadeShock.
“I don’t think it’s an accident that CDPR did not specify what platforms it’s releasing on,” pointed out blackthorn_orion.
“I’d expect it’s either targeting PS6 or whatever Microsoft calls its next Xbox or it’s technically cross-gen but barely runs on PS5/Xbox Series,” HomeMadeShock replied.
To be fair, there should be a real concern that The Witcher 4 might not be released on current systems, following the launch woes of Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
That being said, perhaps it’s not a concern after all if CDPR avoids those woes next time around by making The Witcher 4 a next-gen title. Only time will tell.
At the time of writing, The Witcher 4 does not have a release date.
