I Can’t Believe the Pokémon Devs Are Making This Incredible-Looking Action RPG

The Pokémon devs are breaking boundaries with their upcoming action RPG, and it’s absolutely jaw-dropping. 😍 This new game is unlike anything we’ve seen from them before — and fans can’t get enough of it!

There were plenty of awesome video games shown at this year’s Xbox Showcase, but one of them stood out above the rest, especially when it was revealed who the developers were. The Pokémon developers, Game Freak, showed off an ambitious open-world action RPG called Beast of Reincarnation, and it looks like it has the potential to compete with some of the best in the genre.

Game Freak isn’t just stepping out of its comfort zone with this new game. Beast of Reincarnation is incredibly different and far more ambitious than anything the studio has made before. While many have lost faith in the studio after several buggy entries in the Pokémon series, this project could mark a turning point for the studio.

Beast of Reincarnation Is Game Freak’s New Action RPG

It Looks Like the Most Ambitious Game the Pokémon Devs Have Ever Made

The reveal trailer for Beast of Reincarnation didn’t give players much to go on, but what was shown excited and surprised gamers everywhere. Japan is now a post-apocalyptic nightmare of ever-changing landscapes inhabited by horrifying beasts. Billed as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG,” Beast of Reincarnation will have players take on the role of Emma, an outcast cursed as a Blighted One who travels with her canine companion, Koo, and might just be humanity’s last hope. While the Pokémon series has some interesting lore, Game Freak has never been known for its narratives, so it’ll be interesting to see how they handle a game with a bigger focus on story.

That said, the most striking thing about the Beast of Reincarnation reveal trailer was how phenomenal the game actually looks. It doesn’t just look good for a Game Freak game, it looks better than most of its competition. A lot of games in the open-world action RPG genre sacrifice graphical beauty for other aspects like gameplay or narrative, but this one seems to feature a unique, compelling story and demanding, intense combat without sacrificing visual quality. Even though it proudly wears its influences on its sleeve, if the reveal trailer is any indication, Beast of Reincarnation is going to be a seriously stunning game.

Pokémon Has Been Game Freak’s Main Focus for the Last Thirty Years

The Pokémon Devs Have Made Smaller Titles, But Nothing like This

A lot of people think Game Freak is just part of Nintendo and solely works on first-party titles, but that’s not the case. The developers have created numerous other games, but many of them are often forgotten or go unnoticed because they live in Pokémon’s overwhelming shadow. Titles like Pocket Jockey and Harmoknight never got much attention because Game Freak has dedicated a majority of their time and resources to Pokémon over the past thirty years. Outside of that series, all their games have been smaller, simpler, and more like indie titles, but Beast of Reincarnation is exactly the opposite.

Game Freak hasn’t branched out much from Pokémon or their smaller titles, but Beast of Reincarnation is a massive, AAA, open-world game that looks like it was made by veterans of the genre. It’s definitely a far cry from the kinds of titles they usually make, but that might work in the developer’s favor.

Nobody was expecting something like this from Game Freak, which means they’re already being underestimated. Beast of Reincarnation appears to be a passion project for the studio rather than something they’re required to make, so they’re likely putting their hearts into it to deliver the best game possible. If the trailer showed anything, it’s that Game Freak has the potential to be so much more than just Pokémon.

Game Freak Has a Lot to Prove

Can the Pokémon Devs Actually Make an AAA Action RPG?

In recent years, many gamers have become frustrated with the Pokémon franchise and have been convinced that the series needs to change direction if it wants to succeed in the Switch era. But even though many assumed Game Freak’s best work was behind them, the trailer for Beast of Reincarnation makes it look like the studio’s best is yet to come. Many have wondered what the developers could do if they were let off the leash, but most people never imagined they could make a game as expansive and ambitious as this title seems to be.

Open-world games are hugely popular, especially games influenced by Japanese culture, and Beast of Reincarnation is shaping up to be one to watch. Obviously, there’s some skepticism, especially given Game Freak’s track record in recent years, but the reveal trailer gave the impression that real care and effort are going into this project. It appears to be a genuine attempt to create something meaningful and new. Despite the excitement, it’s wise to keep expectations in check. Like everyone else, the wait continues to see whether Beast of Reincarnation lives up to its potential.
