During Donald Trump’s inaugural parade earlier this week, Twitter owner and Department of Government Efficiency (ie DOGE) head Elon Musk took to the stage at the Capitol One Arena to give a short speech. Addressing the crowd, he performed a gesture that many, including New York Democratic Party Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortex, likened to a “Heil Hitler salute”.
Musk denied the allegations, saying that AOC had “just 100% lost her marbles”, writing that “The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired”. This has done little to convince his detractors, however, and many gaming subreddits are joining the list of sports subreddits now outright banning all Twitter/X links in response.
“Given everything that’s happened in the past few days, particularly involving the Nazi behaviour from [X owner Elon Musk], we are considering blocking links to The Site Formerly Known As Twitter,” Magic: The Gathering subreddit moderator u/Kylemoters posted. “What do you guys think?”
The response was “overwhelmingly in favour”, and so now, looking at the sidebar, you’ll see a new rule stating that “No links to Twitter/X” are permitted.
r/Destiny2 moderator u/YujinTheDragon likewise announced that all Twitter links are now “forbidden”, stressing that the community does “not tolerate Nazis” and that anyone “spouting Nazi ideology or hateful speech have, and always will be permanently banned”.
The Kingdom Hearts subreddit is also joining the wave of communities banning Twitter links, highlighting that they are “a highly diverse community”. So, while they mostly want to avoid politics, “this had to be done.”
Many are in support of the idea simply because Twitter links require an account to view them, making them inaccessible to those who don’t use the platform anyway.
r/Nintendo, with over 2.3 million members, has also banned links to Twitter “due to the recent actions of Elon Musk”. It even provided an automoderator command for other subreddits to use if they wish to do the same, asking the community to “Please find alternative sources” or simply “use archives [and] screenshots.”
Across Reddit, many more users are petitioning to ban Twitter links, while moderators continue to poll their communities. u/-N0obmaster69- made one such post on the Fortnite subreddit, which skyrocketed to the top with over 2,000 upvotes. Moderator u/brently49 replied, revealing that the team is now discussing the matter internally. It will, however, take a while as the subreddit is developer-supported.
u/Aayan_Farooqui meanwhile called on the Final Fantasy 14 subreddit to do the same, which moderator u/alabomb said is now being discussed among the team. It, and Fortnite, may soon join the growing list of subreddits banning Twitter links.
r/onednd and r/dndnext have already done so, but the main Dungeons & Dragons subreddit is still in the process of deciding, and will host a poll today to ensure that it’s “a community decision, not just a mod one”.
Others games with major subreddits currently considering the ban, or voting in support of it, include:
Halo
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Warhammer
Cyberpunk 2077
Board Games
Linux
Super Smash Bros.
Teamfight Tactics
Many of these conversations and polls are still ongoing, but it’s clear that several communities are largely in favour of a wider ban on Twitter links. It remains to be seen which subreddits follow through, however.
