Every now and then I find myself with an overwhelming itch to lose myself in an open world game.

I feel like we can all get burned out on exploring massive open worlds after a while, but as a treat? Nothing beats exploring the mountains of Skyrim, or the seas of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.

So, when an open-world game not only offers a free taster but is also getting rave reviews… I’d be a fool not to check it out. And you would be too. Let’s not be fools.

Cubic Odyssey is a brand-new open-world survival game on Steam that looks like a cross between No Man’s Sky and Minecraft, which is a pretty good blend of games to be.

There’s an extended free demo available to download now, and those who have been getting stuck in report on a game with a huge amount of potential.

“Kinda reminds me a lot of Xenominer, back from the ol’ Xbox 360 indie games days,” notes one user review on Steam. “And for that, I absolutely love it. Maybe it’s a little clunky here and there (the inventory system needs a little more polish, I feel, moving stuff from the hotbar to the inventory and to storage is a bit slow, but fine, whatever).”

Another adds: “It’s like Ace of Spades or MineCraft, but with a story. The game has a lot of potential.”

A third writes: “Hope this game supports multiplayer in the near future. Because this kind of game is fun when playing with friends.”

Clearly, Cubic Odyssey has all the basic ingredients of a hit. Whether it can live up to that potential is obviously dependant on the full release and any subsequent updates, but I daresay this is one game you’ll want to keep an eye on next time you’re looking to scratch that open-world itch.
