Ubisoft’s Far Cry series has some of the most celebrated games in the first-person shooter genre. The original Far Cry, which was developed by German studio Crytek, was revolutionary back in the day, due to its impressive visuals and open-ended gameplay. Its follow-up, Far Cry 2, was similarly praised for its realistic fire simulation, intelligent AI, and immersive survival mechanics. These two games, however, were not nearly as influential as Far Cry 3. The third numbered entry in the Far Cry series laid the framework for the modern open-world video game and basically invented what would later be known as the Ubisoft gameplay formula.

Of course, not every installment in the Far Cry series has been critically acclaimed. The series’ latest game, Far Cry 6, was met with mostly middling reception, despite having a solid antagonist played by Giancarlo Esposito. Meanwhile, Far Cry 4 was also not that well-received. Although it still had its fans, some labeled it as an inferior version of Far Cry 3. Out of all the modern installments in the series, though, Far Cry New Dawn arguably has the worst reputation. Since it’s an anthology series, there aren’t a lot of sequels in the Far Cry franchise. Most of the games in the series are completely disconnected from each other and don’t require any sort of prior story knowledge. Far Cry New Dawn, however, is one of the franchise’s only sequels, given that it is a direct follow-up to 2018’s Far Cry 5. It too, though, is a mostly standalone experience.

Far Cry New Dawn takes place 17 years after Far Cry 5‘s Resist ending, in which a nuclear apocalypse occurs. The game is set in the post-apocalyptic ruins of the fictional Hope County, Montana, where life has once again started to flourish. The survivors of the apocalypse are working to rebuild communities in this region but, due to territorial conflicts between the factions that reside there, it becomes plagued by chaos and bloodshed.

Players in Far Cry New Dawn assume the role of an unnamed security captain, who has to lead the fight against an organized group of marauders who are trying to seize control of the remaining resources in Hope County.

Since it was released only one year after Far Cry 5, Far Cry New Dawn is unsurprisingly much shorter than previous installments in the franchise. There are only around 24 story missions in the game, which is just a fraction of those found in other mainline Far Cry titles.

Although it isn’t a full-length experience, the game still has some promising traits. The expeditions, which are special missions that take place outside the game’s open world map, are one of the best parts of Far Cry New Dawn, and the tier-based combat system adds an interesting twist to the traditional Far Cry gameplay formula.

Far Cry New Dawn is Now 60 FPS on Current-Gen Consoles and Playable via Game Pass

For gamers who play on consoles, now is arguably the best time to give Far Cry New Dawn a shot. Thanks to a recent patch, the game now supports 60 FPS on Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Previously, it was capped at 30 FPS on current-gen consoles, due to it only being available natively for PS4 and Xbox One. However, because of this new update, Far Cry New Dawn runs buttery-smooth on Sony and Microsoft’s latest consoles, including the lesser-powered Xbox Series S.
