A new God of War instalment is very likely in development, but I’m not imagining it’s something we’ll see surface anytime soon.

God of War Ragnarök was released four years after God of War, so it’s unlikely we’ll see anything arise much earlier than 2026.

Of course, there is that rumoured remaster of the franchise’s original trilogy which many believed may be announced this month to coincide with the OG game’s 30th anniversary.

Whether that is real or not though remains to be seen.

In the meantime, there is a God of War-esque game on the horizon that may scratch the itch of those of you looking for some cutthroat action.

Metroid Dread studio MercurySteam has unveiled Blades of Fire, a new action-adventure title that’s set to land on 22 May 2025.

“You are Aran de Lira, firstborn of the King’s Ward,” the synopsis teases.

“The newly crowned Queen Nerea has cast a spell that turns steel into stone. Only her army of abominations wield the divine metal against which other blades shatter.”

It continues, “Find Forge Scrolls, develop your forging skills and craft your weapon to suit your fighting style. The chosen weapon family and the materials you create it from will affect characteristics such as weight, length, durability, penetration and edge quality.”

There are seven different weapon families to choose from with over 30 unique Forge Scrolls leading to what devs call “almost infinite weapon combinations”.

Once you’ve picked your weapon of choice, you’ll want to slash, stab, and bludgeon your enemies – but you’ll only succeed if you’ve picked a weapon that can overcome their armour.

Thankfully, Aran is joined by companion Adso so you don’t have to embark on this journey alone.

There are over 50 enemy types and throughout the tale, you’ll explore huge castles, maze-like palaces and more.

I have to say, the game is looking great.

It’s due to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Epic Games Store with pre-orders available to place now.
