True Detective: Night Country‘s episodes 1 and 2 have dropped enough references to season 1 to pave the way for Matthew McConaughey’s return. The biggest easter egg surrounding McConaughey’s character, Rust Cohle, comes in season 4’s first episode itself, when it introduces a character named Travis. Although Night Country does not explicitly explain Travis’ relationship with Rust, the show’s season 1 had revealed that Rust’s father was an Alaskan named Travis who had died from leukemia. Night Country‘s episode 2 makes this connection even more obvious by confirming that Travis’ surname was Cohle.

Other than the Travis Cohle connection, True Detective: Night Country has also given subtle nods to season 1’s big villain. For instance, in season 4’s episode 2, Peter tells Navarro that the central Tsalal research facility’s finances can be traced to a conglomerate called the Tuttle United. The main antagonist in True Detective season 1, Errol Childress, was a serial killer who kidnapped and murdered women and children in the name of continuing the Tuttle family’s rituals and devotion to a demonic entity called the Yellow King/Hastur.

Since Rust Cohle was ultimately able to trace Errol in True Detective season 1, Navarro and Danver in Night Country would need his help if the Tuttles had something to do with the Tsalal researchers’ deaths. Speaking of the Tuttles, True Detective season 1’s spiral symbols are also recurring motifs in season 4. Since Rust has already deeply dived into the secrets and evil practices of the Tuttle family’s cult, he might have valuable insights into what the symbol means and how it could solve Night Country’s overarching mystery. With so many connective threads between the two seasons, Rust could at least make a cameo in season 4.

Matthew McConaughey Won’t Return In True Detective: Night Country

Unfortunately, despite all the connections between seasons 1 and 4, it seems unlikely that Matthew McConaughey will return. The actor had once stated (via Deadline) that he accepted his role in True Detective season 1 because it was meant to be “one season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle and end.” He clarified that if HBO had given him the option of sticking around for seasons 2 and 3, he would not have taken the part. Although the actor later had a change of heart and claimed that he would return in “the right context” (via The Rich Eisen Show), season 4 has not yet given his character a solid reason to appear.

Many viewers have speculated that Rust will make a cameo in season 4’s finale. While that is always a possibility, keeping his cameo a secret for so long would have been challenging for the show’s creators, and there would have been some rumors surrounding it. Since no rumors or unofficial sources suggest he will return, it would be surprising if he somehow shows up in True Detective: Night Country, even in a small capacity.
