DCU IN CHAOS: Is James Gunn’s “Master Plan” already falling apart? 😱🧬
The red lights are flashing at Warner Bros. as reports surface that “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has undergone a staggering EIGHT test screenings—and the results are reportedly “mixed at best.” Is the Maid of Steel about to crash-land?
Insiders are whispering about a “messy” production, with the studio allegedly panicking over the film’s gritty tone and changing the ending three different times to save the franchise’s second big outing. Despite Milly Alcock’s “powerhouse” performance, word on the street is that the action sequences are a “disaster” and the villain is “flatter than a pancake.” James Gunn just dropped a new teaser featuring Superman to distract us, but the fans aren’t buying it. Is this a “creative evolution” or is the DCU officially cooked before it even gets started?

The “Gods and Monsters” era of the DC Universe (DCU) may be facing its first true existential crisis.
Sources close to Warner Bros. Discovery suggest that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the high-stakes sci-fi epic starring House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock, is in “serious creative flux” following a series of underwhelming test screenings. According to industry insiders, the film has been screened for test audiences at least eight times—a number that traditionally signals a studio in a state of high anxiety.
Three Endings and a Funeral?
The drama centers on the film’s final act. Reports from World of Reel and other industry outlets indicate that director Craig Gillespie has delivered at least three different versions of the movie’s conclusion in an attempt to satisfy testing scores.
While Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El is being hailed as “authentic and gritty,” the surrounding film is reportedly struggling to find its footing. “The performance is there, but the movie isn’t,” one source claimed after a screening in California last week. “The action feels disjointed, and there’s a sense that the studio doesn’t know if they want a space western or a traditional superhero blockbuster.”
The “Superman” Band-Aid
In what many fans are calling a “panic move,” James Gunn recently released a new promotional spot featuring David Corenswet’s Superman. This comes amid rumors that reshoots have been weaponized to add more of the Man of Steel into his cousin’s solo film to bolster its commercial appeal.
“Whenever a studio starts leaning heavily on a cameo to sell a different character’s movie, you know there’s trouble behind the scenes,” said veteran box office analyst Richard Cole. “They are using Superman as a safety net because they aren’t confident Supergirl can fly on her own.”
Adding to the fire, rumors suggest Jason Momoa’s “Lobo” has also been shoehorned into the film via late-stage reshoots, leading to concerns that the movie is becoming an overstuffed “cameo-fest” rather than the focused character study promised by Gunn.
A “Pricey Risk” for Zaslav
With a reported budget exceeding $200 million, Supergirl is a massive gamble for Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who has been ruthless in cutting underperforming projects. Unlike Gunn’s Superman (2025), which enjoyed a relatively smooth production, Supergirl is the first DCU project not directed by Gunn himself, making it a “litmus test” for the studio’s ability to maintain quality across different directors.
Critics of the current leadership are already sharpening their knives. “If Supergirl flops, the entire ‘Chapter One’ roadmap is in jeopardy,” wrote one prominent blogger on X. “You can’t build a universe on a shaky second pillar.”
The Counter-Narrative
However, some voices within the studio urge calm. Proponents of the film argue that eight test screenings aren’t necessarily a sign of failure, but rather a sign of “meticulous polishing” by Gunn and Safran.
“James is a perfectionist,” a DC Studios spokesperson said (off the record). “He isn’t going to release a B-minus movie. If it takes eight screenings to get the ending perfect, he’ll do eight screenings.”
Gunn himself took to social media today to announce a full trailer drop for Tuesday, teasing that “service can be spotty while traveling through space.” It remains to be seen if the trailer can silence the doubters, or if the “Shadow of the Past” (the DCEU’s legacy of troubled productions) is once again haunting the halls of DC.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently scheduled for a June 26, 2026 release. Whether it soars or sinks will likely define the future of the DCU for years to come.
