Elden Ring fans have, fair to say, been feasting well.
A little over one year on from the launch of the award-winning base game, FromSoftware released expansion Shadow of the Erdtree – a DLC that welcomed unprecedented success.
Shadow of the Erdtree was nominated for Game of the Year, a feat very few DLCs achieve.
The fun doesn’t end there as this year, Elden Ring fans have co-op spin-off Elden Ring: Nightreign to look forward to.
Nightreign, it should be made clear, isn’t a sequel but it is set within the same universe as Elden Ring, which should be obvious from the title.
This is a procedurally generated version of Limgrave, named Limveld.
Essentially, players have three in-game days to prepare before they take on a final boss.
In those three days, they’ll prepare by facing off against minibosses, and similar to battle royales like Fortnite, the scale of the map will shrink at the end of each day once they’ve done so.
It’s not a game for beginners, I wouldn’t say.
You can tackle Nightreign alone or in a group of three, but it’s best suited to those who have some Elden Ring experience, otherwise it feels like you’re thrown in at the deep end.
And it goes without saying that the game is much harder in the single-player mode as Nightreign has been designed with co-op in mind.
With that being said, those who prefer solo gaming may find themselves simply awaiting Elden Ring 2 instead.
Unfortunately, that’s not a game that’s on the cards.
Instead, prior to Nightreign’s reveal, creator Hidetaki Miyazaki told Game Watch that the IP will continue elsewhere with FromSoft developing several projects.
Of course, one of those is Nightreign, but it’s interesting to ponder what the others may be if one isn’t a conventional sequel.
“The reason we got Elden Ring or Bloodborne or Sekiro is because From decided not to do a sequel. Let them cook,” wrote totalwert.
“We wouldn’t have Elden Ring if they kept pumping out Dark Souls games. I think they have earned the right to make whatever they want,” added El__Jengibre.
It’s a valid point worth keeping in mind.
