Game Science CEO shares ambitious vision for gaming’s future after Black Myth: Wukong’s GOTY loss at The Game Awards 2024.

The Game Awards 2024 has come and gone, leaving a trail of confetti, tears, and more than a few raised eyebrows in its wake. While some developers are busy polishing their shiny new trophies, others are left to ponder the age-old question: “What does it take to win Game of the Year, anyway?”

Among those scratching their heads is Feng Ji, CEO of Game Science, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Black Myth: Wukong. But rather than sulking in a corner or rage-tweeting about the injustice of it all, Ji has taken to Chinese social media platform Weibo with a message that’s equal parts philosophical and determined.
It seems that for Game Science, the journey is far from over. In fact, if Ji’s words are anything to go by, we might be witnessing the birth of a new gaming philosophy—one that aims to bring AAA experiences to those who’ve never even held a controller.

In a Weibo post that’s part acceptance speech, part manifesto, Feng Ji laid out his thoughts on Black Myth: Wukong‘s journey and the studio’s future plans. While the sting of missing out on the coveted Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2024 is evident, his focus seems to be on a much bigger picture.
According to a translation by The Gamer (and we should note that some nuances may be lost in translation), Feng Ji wrote:
There are still many people in this world who (don’t have a) chance to play so-called (AAA) games. Many people who have never used consoles and computers, many people who feel confused, (pained), and even desperate about the current (world), and many people who are suffering from injustice.
It’s a sobering reminder that while we debate the merits of 4K vs. 1440p, there’s a whole world out there that’s never experienced the joy of ragdolling enemies in a AAA title. But rather than see this as a limitation, Game Science seems to view it as an opportunity.
I think, the more this is the case, the more we need to create better games and create content that allows more people to feel truth, goodness, and beauty.
Now, that’s the kind of mission statement you can get behind. Who needs a golden trophy when you’re aiming to spread “truth, goodness, and beauty” through the medium of digital monkey kung-fu?

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper post-awards drama without a dash of controversy. In the same Weibo post, Feng Ji revealed that he had an acceptance speech ready for winning Game of the Year at this year’s Game Awards… written two years ago.
Now, some might call this confidence. Others might label it hubris. But let’s be real—who among us hasn’t practiced our Oscar acceptance speech in the shower? The only difference is, most of us aren’t brave enough to admit it publicly when things don’t go our way.
This revelation has, predictably, sparked accusations of arrogance from some corners of the gaming community. But before we start throwing stones, let’s remember that confidence in one’s work isn’t a crime. After all, if you don’t believe in your game, who will?
Besides, Black Myth: Wukong didn’t exactly go home empty-handed. The game snagged both the Best Action Game and Players’ Voice awards, proving that while it might not have won the big one, it certainly left its mark on the industry and players alike.
As we look to the future, it’s clear that Game Science isn’t content to rest on its laurels. With a vision that extends far beyond award ceremonies and into the lives of those who’ve never experienced AAA gaming, we can only imagine what they’ll cook up next.
