Day of the Jackal Part 2: Jackal’s next mission is revealed through the EP. What will happen?

The Day of the Jackal‘s EPs tease the Jackal (Eddie Redmayne) season 2 missions and his motive after season 1’s shocking twist that sets the TV remake on a different path from Fred Zinnemann’s 1973 movie and Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel. Not only does the Jackal successfully pull off another near-impossible shot, but he also lives another day when coming face to face with MI6 agent Bianca Pullman (Lashana Lynch), who was supposed to be the one to catch him.

Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant, the EPs behind the series, explain to The Hollywood Reporter what the Jackal is up to in season 2, which has already received a green light. Neame shares that “there’s a serious bit of unfinished business” for the Jackal, with his wife and child’s whereabouts unknown and a debt being owed. Marchant further teases that they “know what his priority is, in terms of what his next mission will be,” meaning his family, but whether the Jackal will succeed is for season 2 to answer. Check out what they said below:

Neame: There’s some serious bit of unfinished business.

Marchant: We actually know what his priority is, in terms of what his next mission will be. He’s trying to find [his family]. Whether he does or not, let’s see.

What This Means For The Jackal

It sounds like season 2 will pick up where season 1 left off. The Jackal has struggled quite a lot during his last mission to take out a tech billionaire, Ulle Dag Charles, aka UDC (Khalid Abdalla). Hired by the competitor, Dance Timothy Winthrop (Charles Dance), the assassin was supposed to stop the launch of River. However, the Jackal fails to deliver the shot at the launch. He makes another attempt in the two-episode finale and finishes the job.

The complication is followed by another problem when the Jackal meets with Zina (Eleanor Matsuura), who’s supposed to deliver the remaining balance, except that Winthrop isn’t planning on paying for the hit and has set a target on them both. A debt is owed, but the Jackal leaves the meeting, hinting that he’s going to find his wife and child first. The EPs’ comment confirms where Redwayne’s elite soldier-turned-assassin is headed and a different type of mission he’ll be leading in season 2.

Our Take On The Day Of The Jackal Season 2

The Jackal Has A Decision To Make

There are a lot of questions The Day of the Jackal season 2 needs to answer, especially with UDC being the Jackal’s last job. The Jackal is planning on retiring, but his plan falls apart when Nuria finds out the truth and takes off with their child. The season 1 finale sees the Jackal completely losing his cool. However, unlike his job, he can’t simply take out Nuria and call it a day. Season 1 sees the Jackal reflecting on family and leading a double life. Norman warns him that there’ll be a day when he has to choose.

The decision was made in season 1 when the Jackal took on what was supposed to be his last job before retirement. It seems that season 2 will continue this nuanced discussion and hopefully reach a verdict. Whether the Jackal is capable of maintaining a family life is a burning question that season 2 will need to address, especially now with a target on his back, an unpaid debt over his head, and Bianca’s discovery of his home life. The highly rated The Day of the Jackal gives fans a lot to look forward to at the end of season 1.
