Deadpool & Wolverine clawed its way into the history books thanks to its critical acclaim and huge box-office return, validating their long-awaited introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, star Ryan Reynolds isn’t ready to break any more fourth walls as the “Merc With a Mouth” just yet.

Speaking with Extra at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards, Reynolds was asked about the potential of Deadpool 4 happening following the well-publicized success of Deadpool & Wolverine. While Reynolds “would love” to do a Deadpool & Wolverine follow-up, he admits he isn’t eager to do another installment anytime as he wants to focus on family life. “Oh, now bite your tongue! I would love that, but there’s a reason it’s been six years since the last one. It just sort of swallows my life whole, and I, you know, have four kids that I wouldn’t mind introducing myself to at some point and spending a little time, just walking them to and from school,” he said.

At the Behind the Camera Awards, Reynolds was honored for his Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriting, something the actor is “immensely proud” of given his dedication to the franchise. According to Reynolds, he “mourned” when he finished writing the R-rated flick and is glad he was able to give fans “joy” through this film.

“I loved every second of it, and it’s probably the only film I’ve ever finished that I mourned. I mean, I was genuinely sad and a little depressed when we locked picture, the final sound mix, I remember that was kind of it and then suddenly I just felt like, ‘All the possibility is gone. Like, that’s it, this is the movie. That’s what’s going out there,” he said. “The way it was received though, in a world that is desperately in need of a little bit of joy here and there, it felt really good to deliver that.”

With Deadpool & Wolverine becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie and seventh-highest-earning superhero movie ever ($1.338 billion), calls for a potential follow-up were only going to grow louder. Before its premiere, director Shawn Levy expressed his openness to a potential Deadpool & Wolverine sequel and revealed which hero he’d like Deadpool to do a team-up film with down the line. Meanwhile, Reynolds has teased which Avenger he’d like to see Wade Wilson alongside.

Reynolds’ Deadpool duology under the 20th Century Fox banner gave him a major career boost following his failed turn as the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the disaster that was DC’s Green Lantern. Thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool is the second-highest-grossing Marvel hero in history to Spider-Man, with the film introducing the MCU to the mutant era thanks to the inclusion of several X-Men franchise characters. Reynolds stars in Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Emma Corrin (Cassandra Nova), Wesley Snipes (Blade), Channing Tatum (Gambit), Jennifer Garner (Elektra Natchios) and Dafne Keen (Laura/X-23).

When next fans will see Deadpool in the MCU remains up for debate, though Marvel president Kevin Feige insists he’s an important part of the cinematic universe’s future. Reynolds has been linked to potential appearances in the upcoming Avengers sequels, Doomsday and Secret Wars, refusing to confirm or deny his involvement.
