From secret meetings to tattle-taling corgis, Prince Harry didn’t hold back in his memoir, Spare. And in this resurfaced excerpt, the 40-year-old royal explained why he still has the Duke of Sussex title (even though he offered to give it up).

In the tell-all memoir, the Duke of Sussex revealed that he originally pitched the idea of him and Meghan Markle leaving London to his dad, King Charles, who said the request must be put in writing. Begrudgingly, Prince Harry followed orders.

He wrote, “In the first days of January 2020, I sent him a watermarked letter broadly outlining the idea, with bullet points, and many details.”

Prince Harry was adamant that if a resolution couldn’t be reached, he would gladly give up his royal title. He continued, “Throughout the exchanges that followed, all marked PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL, I hammered the essential theme: we were prepared to make any sacrifice necessary to find some peace and safety, including relinquishing our Sussex titles.”

This is where things got complicated between Prince Harry and King Charles. “I rang to get his thoughts. He wouldn’t come to the phone,” Prince Harry added. “I soon received a long email from him saying we’d have to sit down and discuss the whole thing in person. He’d like us to come back as soon as possible.”

When Prince Harry made arrangements to return to London, King Charles was “too busy” to see him and asked if he could return at a later date. The Duke of Sussex turned down the offer because it didn’t coordinate with his schedule.
