BioWare quietly releases free Dragon Age: The Veilguard weapons DLC on PC with strange restrictions and no console support.

Just when you thought BioWare had completely abandoned Dragon Age: The Veilguard faster than players abandoned their playthroughs, the studio has emerged from the shadows with… a weapons pack. Not story DLC. Not New Game Plus. Not even a photo mode. Weapons. With eyeballs on them.

In a move that absolutely nobody saw coming (including, apparently, BioWare’s own social media team), the studio quietly dropped “Rook’s Weapons Appearance Offer” on Steam this Thursday. No announcement, no fanfare, just a stealth release that’s about as coordinated as the game’s post-launch support strategy.
And here’s the kicker—this olive branch is only being extended to PC players. Console players? Well, they can keep dreaming about those eyeball-covered weapons they never knew they didn’t want.
A free gift nobody asked for (but only if you’re on PC)

The surprise drop of new content for Dragon Age: The Veilguard might have been exciting if it wasn’t so bizarrely handled. PC players logging into Steam were greeted with a weapon cosmetics pack featuring the “Watchful” set—a collection of creepy, pustule-covered items that look like they were rejected from a Lovecraftian horror game.
The timing couldn’t be more peculiar. After EA publicly declared the game had missed sales targets by a whopping 50% and gutted the Dragon Age team in January, most assumed we’d seen the last of any meaningful additions to the game.
What’s particularly strange is the complete radio silence from both BioWare and EA about this release. No tweets, no blog posts, nothing. It’s as if they’re embarrassed to admit they’re still supporting the game at all—or perhaps there’s simply no one left to write the announcement.
Even the Steam store page couldn’t be bothered to show what players are actually getting—instead of screenshots of the new skins, they’ve just recycled generic gameplay images from the base game. Nothing says “we care” quite like not even taking fresh screenshots of your “new” content.
The limited-time nature of this offer raises even more questions. According to the same page, these cosmetics are only available to those who purchase the game by April 9th. After that? Who knows! Maybe they’ll vanish into the Fade, never to be seen again—which might actually be a blessing, judging by the community’s reaction.
BioWare’s last gasp or a sign of things to come?

The community response to these new weapons has been about as warm as a Ferelden winter. Players aren’t exactly thrilled with the aesthetic direction, which continues the game’s trend of divisive visual choices:
This isn’t the first time The Veilguard’s art direction has come under fire. From day one, players have criticized the game’s overdesigned look, which stands in stark contrast to the more grounded aesthetic of previous entries:
The pack arrives alongside a 50% discount on Steam, bringing the game down to $30 until March 27th.
This aggressive price drop, combined with the game’s recent addition to PlayStation Plus, paints a clear picture of EA’s desperation to salvage something from what they’ve deemed a commercial disappointment.
Whether this free DLC is the last gasp of a dying project or a hint that more content might be hiding in the game files remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear—if BioWare was hoping to win back disgruntled fans with this offering, they might need to rethink their strategy. Maybe next time, try something without pustules?
What do you think about this surprise DLC? Are you excited to wield these eyeball-covered weapons, or would you rather BioWare focus their remaining resources elsewhere? Let us know in the comments!
