The Elder Scrolls 6 faces new competition from Crosswind, a free-to-play pirate survival MMO on Steam. Is it enough to challenge the legend?

For long-time RPG fans, very few titles can even match the status of The Elder Scrolls series. The series not only holds a special place in most players’ hearts but also showcases how RPGs should be made, setting a high bar. These titles aren’t just games now, they’re cultural phenomena.

Todd Howard confirmed that the latest title in the series, The Elder Scroll 6 is in development. Of course, fans are in a frenzy, dreaming about what this next chapter will look like. That’s a question that, for now, seems to be far from being answered.

However, while fans eagerly await more news from Bethesda, one thing is already clear, there will be more than a few competitors. The latest challenger to join the fray is the free-to-play game: Crosswind.

For those unfamiliar, Crosswind is an upcoming survival MMO set in the Age of Piracy. While the game is an MMO at its core, it brings with it a mix of features that could easily attract fans of The Elder Scrolls series and other open-world RPGs.

As with Bethesda’s titles, Crosswind boasts a vast, open world to explore, but it doesn’t stop there (even naval exploration). The game integrates deep narrative elements, an immersive world full of mystery, and expansive gameplay that could rival traditional RPGs.

Since it is an MMO, it will feature a social hub that allows players to interact, forge alliances, and even engage in heated debates. For fans of The Elder Scrolls, who are used to creating deep connections with NPCs and other players, the social hub could prove to be a major draw.

This aspect alone gives the game a sense of community, which can be crucial for keeping players engaged in a vast MMO world. The game is currently in development and developers are conducting playtests and it is expected to be released in 2026.

From what we know, the game certainly shows promise. However, it will be interesting to see if the game has what it takes to challenge the juggernaut of a series with such a legendary history. Only time will tell.

The biggest challenge for The Elder Scrolls 6 isn’t just the pressure to live up to its predecessors, it’s the fact that the competition is growing fiercer. Even though the series has a huge fan following and high anticipation, Crosswind‘s free-to-play model is poised to steal some of the spotlight from paid titles.

Bethesda needs to prove that the game (teased back in 2018) is not just a new coat of paint on the same old formula. Fans have high expectations, whether that means a bigger, more interactive world, more customization options, or even a deeper multiplayer component.

Even if the title is not completely bug-free, it’s not like Skyrim was any better when it comes to bugs, but there needs to be more than enough elements to hook the players. Otherwise, free-to-play titles like Crosswind could steal the wind from under the sails.

For now, Todd Howard and Bethesda have their work cut out for them. But one thing’s for certain: the wait for The Elder Scrolls VI is about to get a whole lot more competitive.
