The Witcher 4’s director, Sebastian Kalemba, wants to focus on building strong NPCs that will make the game feel more immersive.

The Witcher 4 is making headlines after its reveal trailer at The Game Awards in December last year. The game is getting a lot of attention at the moment since it is bound to make major improvements from its predecessors, including the widely celebrated The Witcher 3.

One such improvement revolves around improving the quality of NPCs in the game by making them more engaging and interesting to stand out and have an identity, which might make the game more immersive.

The NPCs in The Witcher 4 have been strategically placed and designed to give more weight to the narrative since the creators wanted to make the game more immersive.
NPCs play a major role in any open-world game these days since they help build an environment that facilitates choice-based storytelling, making the players feel a sense of control over their surroundings, and it also helps them find a sense of belonging to the game’s world.
The Witcher 4’s game director, Sebastian Kalemba, also talked about the same in a recent interview with Parris (via YouTube).
We have this rule to make the every single NPC looking like a living, you know with their own story behind, um, actually the the village it’s called strongford that you have been able to experience is a small village, but generally every single NPC know each other, you know, and we are definitely pushing the quality of the NPC, the way they look, the way they kind of behave, their facial performance as much as possible because we want to make even more immersive experience than we used to.
After assessing the director’s comment on the importance of NPCs in the upcoming The Witcher 4, it is clear that the game will be full of possibilities, and you will be able to dictate your journey. The upcoming game will also redefine monster encounters.

The biggest reason why NPCs play an integral part in the story of video games is that they belong only to the world of the game, in the sense that they do not know anything about the world outside of it, whereas a player is very much aware of both worlds. The Witcher 4 will also expand on the long-lasting lore of the game.
This makes the experience of talking to them feel like you are visiting your friend’s hometown for the first time, and they are taking you around to places that are personal to them.
This is one of the most important aspects of why they help make a game feel more immersive and interactive. You might end up falling in love with someone or end up killing someone, the repercussions of which might change the way you approach the story now. What do you think about it?
