JJ Maybank’s death in the Outer Banks Season 4 finale was one of the most jaw-dropping moments in the show’s history. But if you thought the Pogues were done with their wild plot twists, think again — because Chase Stokes might’ve just dropped a major hint that JJ isn’t gone for good.

On June 3, Chase posted a casual photo dump from a Netflix Tudum event, where he and most of the cast were promoting Season 5 (which is also the show’s final season, btw). Missing from the group? Rudy Pankow. Which, sure — makes sense since his character was, you know, killed off. But the eighth slide of Chase’s carousel had fans losing it: a meme of the fairy godmother from Shrek with the words “he is alive” written on her hand.

…A cryptic inside joke? Or a full-on JJ resurrection tease?

Fans immediately spiraled. Since Season 4 introduced some mystical elements (hi, Blue Crown), there’s a theory that the crown has resurrection powers and might bring JJ back. More realistically? He could return via flashbacks or dream sequences. Either way, the Shrek meme wasn’t just a random internet relic — it felt intentional.

But here’s where things get messy. Some fans think JJ’s death was more than just a plot twist — and might’ve stemmed from off-screen drama.

So, is Rudy Pankow really out?

Technically, yes. JJ died in the finale, and there’s been no confirmation of Rudy returning.
