Jason Momoa’s alleged on-set behavior was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, leading to one cast member’s ousting from the project.

You know, they say all that glitters isn’t gold—and if there was ever a perfect example of this, it’s the recent hullabaloo surrounding A Minecraft Movie. On the surface, it’s got everything: a starry ensemble cast led by Jason Momoa and Jack Black, and a script that could have been a fever dream come to life. But underneath all that pixelated charm lies a controversy that could give you whiplash.
Fans were hit with a curveball when Twitch streamer Rachell ‘Valkyrae’ Hofstetter’s cameo was suddenly cut, leaving a trail of gossip and questions in its wake. What happened, you ask? Well, last year, she herself spilled the beans. Apparently, Momoa’s on-set behavior was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back, leading to the actress’ ousting from the project. No one likes to stir the pot, but hey, sometimes the soup boils over.

A Minecraft Movie: Valkyrae on drama behind her cameo cut & Jason Momoa’s alleged on-set outburst
In an interview (via PC Gamer) back in September 2024, Valkyrae shared her experience of watching Jason Momoa, who apparently got “really mad” at the crew after an emotional scene, yelling at them for not setting up shots correctly. Valkyrae, visibly disturbed by the moment, made it clear:
I was like, man, this is not a good work environment. I would not be happy working under these conditions.
She also admitted that after the emotional scene, Momoa’s anger got the best of him. “He was just angry, like really mad and, like, yelling,” Valkyrae recalled.
As the movie hit theaters, fans immediately noticed Valkyrae’s absence. But she addressed this head-on during her April 6 stream (via Dexerto). She confirmed that her cameo was axed:
As for the Minecraft Movie, let’s just say I’m not gonna touch too much on it. But as much as you guys saw the other creators that were in it, would have been the equal amount you saw me in it which is 30 seconds.

She didn’t mince words when it came to her decision to distance herself from the controversy:
I would much rather not have 30 seconds than be sued.
Her comments raised suspicions, as many speculated that her negative portrayal of Momoa’s behavior might have led to her removal. And honestly, when you consider the timing—right after her interview—it’s hard not to think that this was more than just a coincidence.
Was Momoa caught up in the heat of the moment, or was this something deeper? Either way, Valkyrae’s experience left a sour taste in her mouth!
Box office domination: A Minecraft Movie’s staggering success
Despite the drama surrounding the film’s production, A Minecraft Movie turned out to be a box office smash. In its opening weekend, it raked in $157 million domestically and a whopping $301 million worldwide (via IGN). And we’re not surprised. Fans of the game, families looking for a lighthearted adventure, and those just in it for some mindless fun all flocked to theaters.
Sure, the reviews were a mixed bag, but the movie’s chaotic energy was exactly what some viewers wanted.

To put that into perspective, the film’s $150 million production budget was quickly doubled, making the box office results a colossal success for the franchise. A Minecraft Movie has already recouped its costs and is well on its way to surpassing expectations.
And Jason Momoa and Jack Black’s success in A Minecraft Movie has one-upped another gaming adaptation we all know well.
Remember The Super Mario Bros. Movie? Chris Pratt and Black teamed up for that one too, and while it was a box office sensation in its own right, Well, Super Mario earned a respectable $146 million in its opening weekend in 2023 (according to THR), but A Minecraft Movie surpassed it by $11 million in its first three days. What’s even more amusing is that Black was part of both movies!
A Minecraft Movie is currently running in theaters!
