It’s been a hot minute since we last heard about Ghost of Yōtei, but it appears that Sucker Punch Productions is gearing up for a more lengthy reveal.
Ghost of Yōtei was first announced during PlayStation’s State of Play presentation in September last year.
Similar to the first game, it’ll be about players taking on the role of a warrior who becomes “The Ghost”.
While we haven’t heard much about the game since September, fans have spotted new information about the story has been added to the game’s official website.
The description reads: “300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, a new warrior – Atsu – rises from the ashes of her homestead. Filled with fury and determination, Atsu will hunt down those responsible for the death of her family and exact her revenge. Every odd job and bounty will provide the coin she needs for her journey. But how she fights, survives, and evolves the legend of the Ghost, will be up to you.”
While we already knew details about the setting and main character, we’ve now learned that the story will involve her being on a revenge mission to avenge her family.
Following that, mentions of “every odd job and bounty” have led fans to believe that there will be a bounty hunting mechanic where Atsu can seek out wanted criminals throughout Japan and bring them to justice.
Adding “provide the coin she needs” to this also implies Ghost of Yōtei will have some kind of in-game economy, which is something the original Ghost of Tsushima didn’t have.
“How she fights, survives, and evolves the legend of the Ghost, will be up to you,” also correlates with what Sucker Punch Productions has previously said about the game design.
In earlier reveals, the developer has said that players will have more control over Atsu’s choices and narratives compared to the previous game.
The store page also references weapons Atsu will be able to use in the game, citing the ōdachi, kusarigama, and dual katanas as possible combat options.
Ghost of Yōtei doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, but Sucker Punch Productions is still sticking with the 2025 window.
