Unlike James Gunn’s approach to Superman, the Avengers 5 schedule might contributed to another rushed output, especially in terms of visuals.

Although MCU’s producer-driven template has proven to be a success in the past, in recent years, things have been pretty mixed, especially in terms of its writing and CGI. As for the latter, it mostly has to do with the unreasonable deadlines that the artists often have to deal with, and the barrage of reshoots certainly doesn’t alleviate their case.

With Avengers 5 entering production, which is currently 13 months away from its scheduled release, fans fear Doomsday might encounter those same issues, especially when compared to James Gunn’s approach to Superman.

It has been over two years since Superman, and in turn, the DCU was announced. And just a month after the initial revelation, Gunn kickstarted Superman’s production with a complete script at his disposal, something the MCU isn’t familiar with.
Moreover, considering the filming of the movie wrapped up a year before Superman’s scheduled release, the post-production crew was left with an adequate amount of time to ensure everything was perfect. In contrast to Gunn’s approach, Doomsday will likely contribute to another crunch situation, something that hasn’t worked out in the MCU’s favor in the past.
Oomf reminded me Superman has had 16 months to complete production while Doomsday has 13 and there’s like 50+ heroes in this one ? Yeah it’s over LMFAO https://t.co/xMBHn2Kviw

That’s not even counting non-character aspects, like environments, objects, etc.

In addition to the small production window, per Jeff Sneider, Doomsday apparently still lacks a complete script, which, if true, could take a heavy toll on the VFX crew.

Amidst the slew of underwhelming MCU releases that were riddled with lackluster visual effects, James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a major outlier, both in terms of writing and visuals.
Given that Gunn himself has been part of the pipeline, the director has been vocal about allowing the VFX crew adequate time to run their magic, which is also the case for Superman (via Thread).
This is why we wrapped on Superman a year before release and why they’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that,” Gunn said. “This is why we start heartily editing during the shoot. It’s why I prepare so vigorously and why we only shoot finished screenplays. And Supergirl, which I’m not directing, is being handled the same way. I can’t praise the VFX artists that help us create magic enough.
Writers are getting the same treatment under Gunn’s regime, as instead of pushing them against the clock, the filmmaker has ensured that writers’ visions will be prioritized, which explains the delay in The Batman 2.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026.
Superman is currently slated to hit theatres on July 11, 2025.
