Dragon Age The Veilguard' Rook

A mysterious update to Dragon Age: The Veilguard has added a new DLC weapons pack to the game. The surprising addition comes after Bioware announced support for the game would be limited going forward.

A post shared on Dragon Age: The Veilguard‘s Steam listing shared details about the Rook’s Weapons Appearance offer. The special DLC weapon appearances are available to players who already own the game or who purchase it and download it before Apr. 8, 2025. The new weapon skins coincide with a deep discount on the game, which is part of a Dragon Age franchise sale from Electronic Arts on Steam, with discounts of up to 80% on various titles.

The minor cosmetics added to Dragon Age: The Veilguard come after the game failed to meet EA’s expectations, reaching only 1.5 million players by the end of 2024. Dragon Age developers at BioWare were downsized to fewer than 100 people earlier this year, with it being reported that the primary focus of the team is now on the next Mass Effect title.

BioWare also laid off the game’s entire writing staff at the end of January, leaving the future of The Veilguard and the franchise as a whole looking grim. One of the game’s early patches promised that future updates would be focused on fixing bugs rather than adding new content, making the new Rook’s Weapons Appearance offer a nice surprise despite the game’s bleak future.

The Veilguard was the fourth major game in the Dragon Age franchise, and a sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition. Released ten years after its predecessor, the Action RPG game allows players to highly customize their characters, with the option to be human, dwarf, elf or qunari as well as rogue, mage or warrior. While the game was released to generally favorable reviews, EA ultimately had incredibly high expectations for the game, and it failed to move enough copies to make it the financial success it was long thought to become.

Development on The Veilguard started in 2015, with the next entry in the Dragon Age franchise originally planned as a live-service game. After the game’s troubles began surfacing in the press, CEO of EA, Andrew Wilson, shared his thoughts on why the game underperformed, blaming it on the lack of a “shared-world experience”.

With the fallout that followed the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the future of the franchise doesn’t look too great. Things also look grim for BioWare as a whole, and the company’s new focus being devoted entirely to a new Mass Effect game has some fans worried about the future of another beloved video game franchise. With EA citing The Veilguard‘s lack of live service elements for its failure, it seems likely that the next Mass Effect game might have those elements whether players like it or not.
