We’re just being spoiled at this point.
In case you missed it, HBO recently dropped a new trailer offering a fresh glimpse at the upcoming second season of The Last of Us – and perhaps rather expectedly, it looks fantastic.
That’s not the only treat coming our way though.
Sony has revealed a proof of concept at the ongoing CES for what’s essentially an interactive The Last of Us experience, placing players inside a real life iteration of the game.
I’m not talking about a basic horror house walkthrough.
Dubbed a ‘Future Immersive Entertainment Concept’, the experience will see players armed with torches and rifles enter a set lined with floor to ceiling Sony Crystal LED panels, placing them right alongside the likes of Ellie and Dina as they attempt to fend off the pursuing infected.
It’s one of those things that really has to be seen to be believed, so I’ll let the trailer do the talking.
Players will seemingly also experience haptics, surround sound and so-called “atmospherics” as they shoot at oncoming enemies on the surrounding LED screens.
As a proof of concept, there’s no guarantee of when this experience may eventually open up to the masses, or where for that matter.
It looks suited to a theme park, and we know The Last of Us has had a horror house at Universal before.
Truthfully, it may never see the light of day – not all proof of concepts end up becoming fully realised, but I don’t think that’ll be the case for this one.
I’m personally quite excited by the idea and it seems like I’m not the only one.
“No matter what this ends up being, that’s some cool s**t,” wrote Reddit user bvanbove.
“A walking dark ride or whatever? Escape room kind of stuff? Seems interesting,” added whyspezdumb.
“Scent is crazy. I don’t need to smell the Rat King,” joked pparranninno, making a funny but interesting point.
