The Theory Of Everything star, 42, touched down in Los Angeles this week to join the chat show host on Wednesday’s episode of the show.

During the interview, Eddie was asked about auditions he had done in the past where he hadn’t got the part – and revealed he had once been seen to play a Star Wars ‘baddie’.

But the actor said that for some big movies you aren’t given a script for the audition, instead you are handing lines from various other projects that give an idea into who the character is – in this case, Star Trek and Pride and Prejudice.

In an attempt to catch the essence of the supposed villain, Eddie recalled the flop audition – where he revealed he attempted to play Mr Darcy with a Darth Vader voice.

He told Jimmy: ‘I auditioned many years ago to play, and at the time we weren’t told what it was, this irritating thing about auditioning for those huge movies is they don’t let you read a script, you have no idea what it is, I just knew it was for a Star Wars film – and it was potentially to play a baddie.

‘But they don’t give you the script. So they give you like sides, like these script pages, and I kind of worked out from looking at them, that they was a bit of something from Star Trek and a bit of something from Pride and Prejudice [laughs].

‘So I found myself going into this audition knowing that I was auditioning to play a Star Wars baddie and I sort of did this, what I thought was this sort of Mr Darcy/Elizabeth Bennett scene in my Darth Vader voice.’

The audience burst out laughing as Eddie mimicked his Mr Darcy does Darth Vader voice, before he added: ‘There was this wonderful casting director called Nina Gold, who has been very generous to me in the past.

‘And I did about seven, eight takes of my sci-fi, weird, romantic, screwed up father voice, and eventually she’s like “Eddie… have you got anything else?” and I was like “No”.

‘So she’s like “Do you want to go?” and I was like “I think I should”.’

Laughing, Jimmy asked: ‘Do you find that when they say at the end of an audition, “You got anything else” that you didn’t get the part?’

‘Yeah it tends to be the case,’ Eddie replied.

Earlier in the day, Eddie was seen arriving at the Jimmy Kimmel Live studio in LA ahead of filming.

He kept it casual in a grey t-shirt and slim jeans, with a pair of sunglasses hanging off his collar.

Eddie completed the relaxed look with a pair of trainers – before changing into a smart suit for the chat show.

It comes after Eddie lifted the lid on starring in and getting involved with the production side of thriller series, The Day of the Jackal.

Eddie and his co-star Lashana Lynch, 36, who star as Jackal and Bianca in the cat-and-mouse style show, opened up to Radio Times about stepping into the roles and how this updated version of the story compares to the original.

The upcoming political thriller follows the 1973 film of the same name as the second English-language adaptation of the 1971 book of the same name.

Reimagined into a contemporary political setting, The Day Of The Jackal (2024) centres around an unrivalled and highly elusive lone assassin, the Jackal who makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee.

However, the Jackal meets his match in a tenacious British intelligence officer who starts to track him down in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, leaving destruction in its wake.

Also starring are Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Chukwudi Iwuji, Game Of Thrones‘ Charles Dance, and Money Heist’s Ursula Corbero.

Eddie told the publication: ‘When I saw this in my inbox, I was pretty… You don’t want to mess with something as brilliant as this, so I was a bit tentative.

‘The thing I love about the original structure, which Ronan has managed to retain, is the odd idea that you have these two protagonists who are deeply morally compromised, making vicious choices and yet you kind of warm to both of them.’

He added that this new version makes it harder to work out who you should root for as the morality is ‘grey’.

‘We all have that blurry territory within us in some ways – that idea of the binary of good and evil doesn’t exist so much,’ he explained.

Meanwhile, Lashana admitted that when she was approached about taking on the role of Bianca, she asked to be involved with the production side of things too.

The actress said she wanted to: ‘Protect the things that I knew I really wanted to discuss within the piece.’
