Eddie Redmayne has shared that his father’s advice was not to botch the remake of ‘The Day Of The Jackal’, a film dear to his dad. The actor recounted how the 1973 classic featuring Edward Fox was one of the few movies repeatedly watched on VHS in his family home, alongside ‘Pretty Woman’ and ‘Dirty Dancing’.
Despite the success of his reboot, which has become a major hit for Sky Atlantic and secured a second season, Eddie’s main concern was living up to his parents Richard and Patricia’s expectations. The 42 year old actor said: “I grew up watching the original movie with Edward Fox, who is sort of ingenious. There was something just so elegant and old school and kind of analog about it, and yet it was the genre that I was completely into.”
He added, “And so when this script arrived in my inbox, I was like ‘you can’t touch it’. But what the guys had done is they sort of created it or moved it to now. And they retained all of that kind of original DNA, but it was new and fresh.”
Eddie also revealed, “And so I decided to do it and my dad was like, ‘I’m thrilled you’re doing it, don’t **** it up’. ” He continued, “Because it’s been coming out in weekly instalments, each week I kind of check in to see whether I ****** it up.”
