Well, you’re going to have to wait even longer to see Meghan Markle‘s new show!
Just days after announcing that her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, would be coming out on January 15, the Duchess of Sussex has made the “easy” decision to push back the release to March 4 because of the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires. She broke the news on Sunday, saying in a statement obtained by People:
“I’m thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California.”
Born and raised in LA, the Suits alum’s show was filmed in her current hometown of Montecito, which is about 80 miles away from the fires. It features her trying her hand at becoming the next Martha Stewart as she hosts events with friends, cooks, and entertains. Speaking to People on Monday, an insider claimed the decision was an “easy one” for the royal to make, an industry source expressed:
“Delaying the release of With Love, Meghan was likely an easy decision for her. I don’t think she could imagine putting out a show centered on joy and hosting when so many people in her home state no longer have homes to host people in.”
However, not everyone has been thrilled with the choice, the confidant acknowledged:
“I think it’s sad that critics are saying she’s only doing this to avoid the fires overshadowing her show. We’re all human, and we’re dealing with a catastrophe.”
On the one hand, we get how releasing a show set in California and all about homes and hosting might feel insensitive right now. So many people just lost their homes, something Meghan and Prince Harry know personally since they have reportedly opened their house to displaced friends. The couple has also traveled to LA to be there to volunteer with World Central Kitchen in Pasadena, where they handed out food and connected with those impacted by the fires.
While tons of other celebs have been out volunteering, Harry and Meg’s appearance was met with a ton of backlash as some claimed they were merely distracting local officials from the real work at hand and just using the moment as a photo op. These kinds of allegations are nothing new for these two, unfortunately.
So, back to the show. We get why Meg might’ve thought it wasn’t the right time. There is a lot more important stuff going on! She’s trying to be respectful, and she’s not the only one taking this stance either. Award shows, for example, are dealing with a similar conundrum.
But did she have to postpone? There are plenty of shows and films still coming out, and people often look forward to content — especially something as light-hearted as this — as a way to distract themselves from a crisis. If promotion felt wrong to her, she could have avoided media appearances or, better yet, used them to highlight and benefit relief efforts. It’s not like the show was live or about fire, something that might really be triggering to folks. She could have found a way to make this work (although, we’re sure she would have been slammed either way…).
With this in mind, others have accused the actress of pushing back the release because she was worried it wouldn’t be viewed enough. There’s been so much talk about the importance of this show for Harry and Meg’s Hollywood careers moving forward (as other projects haven’t done so well). If the world is too focused on other things to tune in, maybe they risk losing out on potential bonuses or future deals?
Not to mention, her show is reportedly linked to the upcoming launch of her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard. Perhaps she had plans to launch products shortly after the series dropped and therefore wants to push that all back? This is all speculation, but it could be more motive for her to hold off. If this decision was all based on her personal finances, though, that is a s**tty look!
