The Last of Us season two of the HBO TV series hasn’t even arrived yet but production for its third season has reportedly begun.
When it comes to video game live-action adaptations, we gamers have not always had it easy. As a Resident Evil fan, that’s a pain that I know oh so well but in recent times, the turbulent tide has begun to turn with a consistent level of good quality (mostly).
For example, in 2020 we got the surprisingly good Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its sequel in 2022 was arguably even better. Now we can look forward to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 starring Keanu Reeves as Shadow with optimism when it arrives in cinemas this weekend.
Then we have TV adaptations, such as the aforementioned The Last of Us from HBO that premiered in 2023 and was greeted with critical acclaim with a 96% rating from critics and 88% from the audience on the aggregate website, Rotten Tomatoes.
What’s more, let’s not forget that the fantastic Fallout series debuted on Amazon’s Prime streaming service earlier this year and was quickly renewed for a second season.
So I think it’s fair to say that gamers, while still with a degree of scepticism, have every reason to feel optimistic when it comes to modern-day adaptations.
With that in mind, we can look forward to the second season of The Last of Us arriving in 2025 and if that wasn’t exciting enough, its third season has already entered pre-production according to a report.
As reported by Collider (via Production Bulletin), despite not knowing what events will play out in the third season of The Last of Us, work has apparently begun.
Unsurprisingly, details are very vague at this time but it’s understood that filming will once again take place in Vancouver, Canada, a popular resort for movie and TV makers.
Without giving too much away, fans of The Last of Us video game series will have a strong inkling as to what events may occur in season two, especially with characters from The Last of Us Part II being cast including Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever), Dina (Isabela Merced), and Jesse (Young Mazino).
No release date has been announced for The Last of Us season two but it is expected to arrive during spring 2025. As for season three, that wouldn’t surprise me if it were released in 2027 at the earliest.
