GrowNewsUS App

To be direct: GrowNewsUS does not have an iOS or Android app. We are not listed in any app store, and any app claiming to be ours is not. This page explains what we hope to build and how to get a similar experience in the meantime.

What an app could do

We are exploring a native app that would offer a few things a website handles less smoothly:

• Instant alerts: optional notifications for the stories and topics you choose, with controls to keep them quiet.
• Offline issues: downloading a daily edition so you can read on a tractor, a train or a flight without a signal.
• Faster saving and reading: your saved stories and read-aloud preferences in one place.

These are plans, not promises. We have no release date, and we will not announce one until there is something real to test.

What you can do today

You can already get much of this on your phone through the website.

Add the site to your home screen

Most modern mobile browsers let you place a shortcut on your home screen so the site opens like an app. In your browser's menu, look for an option such as Add to Home Screen or Install. The exact wording differs by browser and device, so check your browser's help if you cannot find it.

Other ways to stay close

• RSS: subscribe in any feed reader to see new stories as they appear.
• Saved stories: bookmark articles on this site; they are stored on your device.
• Newsletter waitlist: see The Morning Sprout Newsletter page. The list is not live yet, and addresses typed into the form stay on your device.
• Read-aloud: use your browser's built-in features to have articles read to you, where available.

If an app would be useful to you, we would like to know what you would want from it. Write to [email protected]. Your note helps us decide what to build, but it does not register you for anything or collect your details anywhere other than your own email program.

We would also rather be honest about the trade-offs. Building and maintaining apps for two platforms takes sustained effort, and a fast, readable website that works well on a phone is our priority for now. If and when an app appears, we will announce it here first, and it will be free of surprises about what data it keeps. Until then, the site is the product.
